Replacing crowns on front teeth

Hello,

I have had dental crowns on my front teeth for over a decade now. As time has passed, they have discolored and I really don’t like the way they look anymore. I need to have them replaced. But my dentist recommended that I get braces first. He said he wouldn’t replace the crowns until I had this done because my teeth are slightly bucked. This doesn’t seem right to me since I have already had crowns placed on my teeth. My budget will not allow me to have both the braces and the crowns done. I just can’t stand my smile any longer and need to have something done. What do you think?

Tamara,

Your crowns can be replaced. Ideally, it would be nice to have your teeth straightened before the crowns were done. But it doesn’t sound like your dentist is respecting your budget. Maybe it is time to see another dentist that is open to doing the replacement crowns for you.

Although, be sure you get all-porcelain crowns since they are on your front teeth. If the dentist recommends porcelain-fused- to-metal crowns, you may want to keep looking. This is because with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns there will eventually be a dark line present near your gumline. And since these are highly visible front teeth, you don’t want to be self-conscious about this.

It is also important to find an excellent cosmetic dentist. Many dentists are simply trained to fix things, but a true cosmetic dentist is an artist. They want you to absolutely love your new smile. Best of luck to you.
